Can someone explain why Corrin/Kamui is a bad inclusion for sm4sh?
From what I understand, there are two main arguments:
1. It’s another Fire Emblem character.
2. It’s another swordfighter.
What I really don’t understand is why these are problems.
1. This brings it to 6 Fire Emblem characters (technically 5 since Lucina is just a Marth clone). Zelda has 5 characters as well, and Pokemon has 6. The Super Mario series has 8, to be fair.
2. I don’t get why it’s a problem to have another swordfighter. With Corrin, that brings the number of swordfighters up to 12. There are 58 characters in total. Swordfighters don’t even comprise ¼ of the roster, heck, they almost comprise 1/5 of it. Plus, Corrin is a very unique fighter, and extremely different from all the rest of the swordfighters already in the game. Most of his attacks hardly even utilize the sword.
So, what’s the issue?
Because wouldn’t you rather have Zero from FE:F shooting a bow&arrow from a range and kicking for combos or someone slashing around a sword. Don’t get me wrong, I love that they’re adding a new FE character as I am a fan of the series, but it’s not.. fresh(?) Especially since every character from the franchise in smash has a sword. It’s just dull to me. They have so many more classes that they could’ve used, so many more weapons to choose from including the bow and arrow, lances, axes, and tomes, which they tried to do with Robin but Robin’s so slow and difficult to use that only the most dedicated players still play him/her.
The thing with sword characters is that they are very similar. Things like Marth and Lucina being clones, Roy being slightly different enough to make him more of a rush down character. Ike’s, Shulk’s, and Cloud’s nair, among other moves. There’s no different style to it like how people generalize “magic users” like Ness and Lucas into the same category. They do not play the same in any way or fashion, the only exception being their recovery, which hits differently as well.
Anyway, I felt like rambling and this happened so there’s my input on sword characters. I still love Corrin/Kamui but I don’t think s/he didn’t really need to be included in Smash
This is actually some good input. I’ve never personally played a Fire Emblem game, so I don’t know the spread of characters as well as others, but I get how getting characters that work mostly the same could be bothersome. And, maybe it’s because I haven’t played the FE games that I think that Corrin is more unique than people are giving him credit for, not that he doesn’t have his own similarities. While I understand that there are other classes, they mostly seek to focus on the main, iconic characters from the series, and no one is more recognizable in a game to a gamer than the main character. While he does have just a sword, he still does so much more. He’s got a paralysis blast which can combo into the dragon hand, he’s got his lance arms, the dragon wings, and his straight up pin, which is completely unique to him. He’s also one of the two swordfighters to have a drill, and he’s the only character that has a double-sided counter. His Final Smash is also different from the rest of the FE cast. Granted, it does look like much of his standard tilts and aerials might be swordplay, but with the stronger attacks, he’s much different.
I agree that many of the sword characters have similar movesets, but that’s kind of hard to avoid when you have a plethora of moves and they all use the same weapon. Having a couple characters do something similar isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Lucario and Mewtwo both use orb projectiles, Charizard and Bowser both breathe Fire, Kirby and Charizard have the same up throw, Mario and Luigi both throw fireballs, etc. Even the characters that are vastly different in playstyle have a couple similarities.
Still, I get what you’re saying. I like the inclusion of Robin and Corrin because Marth, Lucina, Ike, and Roy are all just standard swordfighters. That being said, this doesn’t make them bad characters, but Robin adds the option of range and magic, and Corrin changes up the mechanic in an entirely different way. Which, now that I think about it, really irritates me why a bunch of people would be upset about Chrom. In Palutena’s Guidance for Robin Viridi even points out that Chrom would basically be exactly like Ike; he’d basically be a clone. There’s some inconsistency there.
Thanks for the insight though, I hadn’t put much thought into all the different classes they could put in from FE. Hopefully there’ll be some representation in the future.
The only real problem I had/have is how people wanted Roy so bad as to make it where the Smash devs spent months making him. Then he ended up similar to Marth/Lucina and there goes the work hours they could’ve spent working on someone more exciting or new. Personally, I would’ve loved to see them reveal Corrin over Roy, but oh well we already have the confirmed final roster.
True. I appreciate how they made him a bit more unique, though. I’d always wanted to play Marth, but the way he’s balanced just made me awful with him since I play up close, but since that’s where Roy’s power is and there’s less room for error since he’s a bit slower, I’ve more or less gotten used to him. At least he’s moreso his own character than he was in Melee.

Salt mostly
They’re upset about the blatant advertising and claim Cornbread took the spot of that irrelevant fatass crocodile that MISSED THE BUS FOURTEEN YEARS AGO AND THAT NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT NOW.
They’re upset that Smash 4 favors modern Nintendo characters instead of the classics, even though the classics have been WELL accounted for in the past three games. Every classic character that matters is already (or has already been) in Smash.
A new era has begun and we can only expect Inkling, Wonder Red, Henry Flemming, Bandanna Dee, Rhythm Heaven, and beyond for Smash 5 and onward. All the Salty Sanders need to get with the times or drown in their salt beds because we’re only moving forward from here!
I personally love the addition of Kamui. Though I’m just slightly miffed since I didn’t think we’d be allowed another Fire Emblem character and I wanted the next one to be Anna. I also wanted the next sword fighter to be Sora so I lost in both aspects. Either way, Kamui looks like tons of fun and I’ll definitely pick him/her up on release.
Well, Corrin didn’t necessarily “take a spot.” I don’t get why this is such a scapegoat as to why people are mad because they use it on all the characters that didn’t. Dark Pit, Lucina, and Dr. Mario, the original 3 “spot takers,” are clones, were originally pallet swaps, and all Sakurai did was make them their own icon. They literally took 0% effort from the team. Corrin is in a similar boat. After Cloud they were going to only release one more character, the Smash Ballot winner, Bayonetta. However, since Fire Emblem Fates is going to be released in North America soon, they wanted to build hype for it because Fire Emblem is a popular series. If anyone “took a spot” from someone else, it’s actually Bayonetta. Which seems vaguely appropriate. And, people obviously still care for King K. Rool, because Sakurai designed the Mii Fighter costume, because that’s what they are, fanfare. Same with Chrom, Tails and Knuckles, Geno, etc.
Most of the classics are very well represented, yes, but more could be done. Such as with Metroid, who only has two characters in Smash, and they’re literally both Samus. There is under-representation in series like Metroid and Donkey Kong, and slight over-representation in cases like Super Mario, who has 8 characters. Granted, I like all the Super Mario characters, but there’s a LOT of them even though there aren’t many of other characters from the other series.
While it’s hard to say what’ll happen in the next Smash Bros, I do agree that, in some manner, we’re moving forward, and have been since Brawl (which, I know, is hard to believe). It was originally strictly Nintendo characters who had a very straightforward, strict moveset and ability list. But, Sakurai realized that people want characters from other games, and he’s grown fond of that idea. We now have a game in which Mario can fight Sonic, Mega Man, Ryu, Pac-Man, Cloud, Link, and Bayonetta. And now, Bayonetta can combo, Corrin has a straight pinning move, Ryu has his button combos straight from Street Fighter, Cloud has a Limit Gauge, and so on.
I wasn’t expecting another FE character either. I was honestly hoping for someone like Shantae so that Nintendo would show some love for the Indie games. Sora was also a hopeful choice for me, but now that Square Enix was on board with Cloud, it’s totally possible that we’ll be seeing Sora join the fight in the future, which will be a glorious day.

Okay, firstly I’m not a smash fan, it’s just that it CONSTANTLY leaks into Fire Emblem fanstuff/tags so I keep picking things up. I’m basically the reverse grumbling about how there’s to much Smash in my FE.
Anyway, the moveset thing seems to be just wank. Because dragon. I seriously don’t know why people think the mere presence of a sword means they are a clone, or why they are so caught up in that detail. It makes as much sense as complaining about characters wearing red.
That being said, I definitely understand the disappointment over there being yet another Fire Emblem character. There’s more FE characters than Zelda characters and Zelda is Nintendo’s biggest series after Mario and FE is kinda niche. Zelda as a series is also both older and has more entries, so yeah FE has unusually large representation. It also went from having two fighters to 6. That’s tripling the character count.
It also means some series people were hoping to be included won’t be included at all or things that had just 2-3 characters won’t get another. I mean, I don’t think any FE fan would have thought “gee five characters are way too few” even if they are excited for Corrin.
I will also skake my fist at the other person who replied to you about King K. Rool because Donkey Kong Country was my childhood and DK is the only other Nintendo series I still play aside from FE. Nintendo better bring him back as an antagonist next DK game they make, because the Kremlings are so much better than the Tiki Tak.
Uh, anyway, I still think people have been too harsh toward Corrin and Sakurai deserves to do some fanboying if he wants. And I don’t get the point to shit on the mother series the character comes from. So I totally understand the disappointment and the poking fun of it, I don’t get the raging hate boners some have.
I agree entirely with the sword thing, and it’s represented the best with Robin, I think. Yes, Robin has a sword, but his focus is moreso on the magic and tomes he uses.
I think part of the reason that there are so many FE characters is that it’s easy to translate their movesets and abilities into the game. With Zelda characters, it’s a bit trickier. Most of the characters don’t show off much of any kind of potential moveset, or show off too much. And then there are some characters, like Zelda, who use a set of moves that they have never once done in game. Granted, she is royal and uses magic pretty frequently, so it’s totallly possible she DOES know Din’s Fire, Nayru’s Love, and the rest, but she’s never shown them off. Plus, Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf are basically the only ones who do anything. I mean, they could still add characters, like was done for Hyrule Warriors, but it’s not as easy. FE characters have specific movesets and abilities that make it much simpler in figuring out how the character moves, their attacks, etc. And, really, it’s just one more character than Zelda. And while they did add in 3 new FE characters, one’s a clone, and the other two are completely different from the rest of the group.
While I do understand being disappointed about not getting a character from a game I love, frankly, Bayonetta is moreso to blame since she was the ballot winner. Corrin is special in that they weren’t going to add anyone besides Bayonetta after Cloud, but they wanted to build hype for FE Fates American release, and show some love to people in Japan who have already played the game. Much like the case with Dark Pit, Lucina, and Dr. Mario, Corrin didn’t “take” a spot on the roster,” he’s a bonus.
I never played a DK game, so I’m not the biggest supporter of King K. Rool, but that’s definitely no reason to trash talk him. Besides, Sakurai did show somewhat representation of the King by making him a Mii Brawler costume. It’s not as good as an actual character, but it shows that Sakurai is paying attention to the character’s that people want.
Raging about it is just dumb. Still the funniest thing to me about all this is how people “don’t want Corrin in [their] game.” Like, just don’t buy him. It’s that simple. If you hate him so much, don’t buy him. XD

Basically
Sakurai: Hey, guys, here’s Cloud.
Haters: Ew, why not an ACTUAL Nintendo character?
Sakurai: We’re also adding Corrin and Bayonetta.
Haters: Not them.
