From what I understand, there are two main arguments:
1. It’s another Fire Emblem character.
2. It’s another swordfighter.
What I really don’t understand is why these are problems.
1. This brings it to 6 Fire Emblem characters (technically 5 since Lucina is just a Marth clone). Zelda has 5 characters as well, and Pokemon has 6. The Super Mario series has 8, to be fair.
2. I don’t get why it’s a problem to have another swordfighter. With Corrin, that brings the number of swordfighters up to 12. There are 58 characters in total. Swordfighters don’t even comprise ¼ of the roster, heck, they almost comprise 1/5 of it. Plus, Corrin is a very unique fighter, and extremely different from all the rest of the swordfighters already in the game. Most of his attacks hardly even utilize the sword.
So, what’s the issue?
Okay, firstly I’m not a smash fan, it’s just that it CONSTANTLY leaks into Fire Emblem fanstuff/tags so I keep picking things up. I’m basically the reverse grumbling about how there’s to much Smash in my FE.
Anyway, the moveset thing seems to be just wank. Because dragon. I seriously don’t know why people think the mere presence of a sword means they are a clone, or why they are so caught up in that detail. It makes as much sense as complaining about characters wearing red.
That being said, I definitely understand the disappointment over there being yet another Fire Emblem character. There’s more FE characters than Zelda characters and Zelda is Nintendo’s biggest series after Mario and FE is kinda niche. Zelda as a series is also both older and has more entries, so yeah FE has unusually large representation. It also went from having two fighters to 6. That’s tripling the character count.
It also means some series people were hoping to be included won’t be included at all or things that had just 2-3 characters won’t get another. I mean, I don’t think any FE fan would have thought “gee five characters are way too few” even if they are excited for Corrin.
I will also skake my fist at the other person who replied to you about King K. Rool because Donkey Kong Country was my childhood and DK is the only other Nintendo series I still play aside from FE. Nintendo better bring him back as an antagonist next DK game they make, because the Kremlings are so much better than the Tiki Tak.
Uh, anyway, I still think people have been too harsh toward Corrin and Sakurai deserves to do some fanboying if he wants. And I don’t get the point to shit on the mother series the character comes from. So I totally understand the disappointment and the poking fun of it, I don’t get the raging hate boners some have.
I agree entirely with the sword thing, and it’s represented the best with Robin, I think. Yes, Robin has a sword, but his focus is moreso on the magic and tomes he uses.
I think part of the reason that there are so many FE characters is that it’s easy to translate their movesets and abilities into the game. With Zelda characters, it’s a bit trickier. Most of the characters don’t show off much of any kind of potential moveset, or show off too much. And then there are some characters, like Zelda, who use a set of moves that they have never once done in game. Granted, she is royal and uses magic pretty frequently, so it’s totallly possible she DOES know Din’s Fire, Nayru’s Love, and the rest, but she’s never shown them off. Plus, Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf are basically the only ones who do anything. I mean, they could still add characters, like was done for Hyrule Warriors, but it’s not as easy. FE characters have specific movesets and abilities that make it much simpler in figuring out how the character moves, their attacks, etc. And, really, it’s just one more character than Zelda. And while they did add in 3 new FE characters, one’s a clone, and the other two are completely different from the rest of the group.
While I do understand being disappointed about not getting a character from a game I love, frankly, Bayonetta is moreso to blame since she was the ballot winner. Corrin is special in that they weren’t going to add anyone besides Bayonetta after Cloud, but they wanted to build hype for FE Fates American release, and show some love to people in Japan who have already played the game. Much like the case with Dark Pit, Lucina, and Dr. Mario, Corrin didn’t “take” a spot on the roster,” he’s a bonus.
I never played a DK game, so I’m not the biggest supporter of King K. Rool, but that’s definitely no reason to trash talk him. Besides, Sakurai did show somewhat representation of the King by making him a Mii Brawler costume. It’s not as good as an actual character, but it shows that Sakurai is paying attention to the character’s that people want.
Raging about it is just dumb. Still the funniest thing to me about all this is how people “don’t want Corrin in [their] game.” Like, just don’t buy him. It’s that simple. If you hate him so much, don’t buy him. XD
